THE KHARITES (Charites) or Graces, were three goddesses of grace, beauty, adornment, joy, mirth, festivity, dance and song. The three Kharites were depicted in classical art as naked women, holding hands and dancing in a circle.

AVIA ROSE (artist)

avia rose

Born and raised in San Diego, Avia Rose, is in her fourth year at SDSU (to graduate Spring 2020) in studio arts with an emphasis in painting and sculpture. She has been painting since she could hold a brush and devoted herself into her work after one painful year as a business major. While Rose was raised Catholic, she has chosen to drop religion, but still finds comfort in the saints and what they stand for, specifically Mary Magdalene and the Virgin. Much of her artistic inspiration comes from the symbolism and style of the Renaissance, Mannerist, and Baroque art periods. She takes elements from these painting styles and puts them into her own work in conjunction with contemporary issues. Rose often uses the depiction of animals in contrasting symbology to their use in Christian religion. Painting people in the nude, she aims to celebrate how we were born, but to also show vulnerability. She uses painting as her  own therapy and outlet, but also for an audience, as we can commune together and feel less alone. Her primary medium is oil, but works with ceramic, plaster, dirt, hair, and various substances.
